Our school started a morning exercise program this year.

The exercise program involves all students and teachers for the first 45 minutes of the day on every Friday.

My class 3A2 was assigned to do rubber band workouts @ the roof top. That is very cool.

The bands have not arrived yet so students are just pretending to workout with bands.

There are many things in life that requires precision. In certain jobs being precise is very important. For example an eye surgeon operating someone's eye. Being precise and accurate is also required of your school work.

To be precise and accurate means a requirement to constantly check your work and evaluate the contents for improvement. To reiterate the process until further effort to improve the work is no longer worth it. When you finish your homework, that is not the end. In fact, finishing your homework should be the beginning of the checking phase. To ensure you have the best possible answer within the time you are given.

Some students asked me: "Cher, what is Wendy's?" Well, if I drew MacDonald s, that would be too common. Wendy's is a pretty new fast food chain in Singapore.

Anyway, hope the cartoons will always be a good reminder for you to CHECK your work. =)

Habits of Minds (HOM) - Persistence

Very often you will hear someone emphasize on the importance of persistence. However, it will be interesting to note that having the habit of persistence doesn't mean will bring you success.

In the cartoon you will see some points on what persistence is 'not'... if you are persistent, but you persist in doing the wrong things, then that persistence will not be good for you.

However, though we know that being persistent is a good habit, we must be wise to choose the right things and persist. Having said that, we got also to be wise to know when to stop and change our focus when something is clearly not within our control.

Therefore being persistent is one thing.
Having the wisdom to choose what and when to persist is another.

Rough pencil sketch of bulldog on paper. I took a photo using my iPhone had it transferred to my iPad. I then adjusted the brightness and contrast of the photo using PS Express. Next I import the adjusted image into Inkpad and started my illustration of the Bulldog in various layers.

If you wonder how I got my cartoons done up so quickly for my classes, here is an example of my sketches during my morning break cum preparation a few days before lesson. If I draw with a pen, then no further inking. If I draw them with a pencil, the next stage will be inking with a pen. Next I will use my iPhone to snap a photo, edit it in iPad, send it to my email from which I will print multiple copies for my students. Cool hey?

For prints, I will ink them in illustrator. But for classroom use sometimes I had to be swift and fast. =) My students enjoyed my cartoons. Ya?

This is the summary for today's K2 class on kingship based on 1 Samuel 7 - 15. For the actual class, each panel was presented as the story unfolds. Each panel was sketched on an A3 paper and then individually inked.

Please note there is a typo error in the 5th panel. It should read 'King Saul took Agag..', not ' King Saul too Agag...'.

BBSS NCC (SEA) - TRAINFIRE @ NCC (HQ)

It has been a very busy week with the school's opening ceremony rehearsals and students' projects. And still there is a trainfire session in the NCC(HQ) from 14oohrs to 1700hrs at the NCC (HQ) today.

What the students did was to be familiar with the function of the new rifle as well as to be efficient in handling misfeeds of rounds during firing.

Today is the first day for the 2-Star Kayaking Course for our Part B (Secondary Two) NCC (SEA) cadets. I had my lunch in Golden Mile, went back and saw them working hard on the spray cover exercise. What they need to do was to practice pulling the spray cover until it becomes natural and easy. The trainer, Roger, gave them instruction to repeat putting the cover on as many times as possible. I find my students very amusing as I watched them struggling to put the spray cover on for the first time. Many were exhausted after their first attempt and wished to be spared from taking it out and putting it back again...

I thought it would be nice to capture them in cartoons... so I took a scrap paper and drew them...

It is one thing to tell yourself to be positive and another to act it out. Self -affirmation as taught by many trainers suggest that you try to think positive. They often fail to emphasize the ACTION bit which happens to be only ingredient that make things work.

It is no wonder that there are many students who go (or forced to go) to a motivation talk, get emotional, and then after that move on with nothing changed or improved.

But I'm sure the trainers are happy, they got your MONEY!!! =)

Sitting down and belly (not 'barely') breathing with soothing music can be one good technique to relax. I learn it when the trainers shared this with my form class during in a motivation talk.

Not sure if the students got the message. When will they start to listen?...

During a home-room workshop, we were taught various strategies to engage students. One that caught my attention is the use of a bell as a signal to mobilize students to stand up and walk around in the classroom. When a second bell is sounded the students are suppose to remain standing where they are. A useful tool to re-shuffle the students' seating position.

A useful tool enough to inspire a cartoon out of it. Hehe... =p

What can I say for this. Didn't your teacher always say, "Listen!!!....".

I do... but with little success 80% of the time.

Told'ya that thing is called glass!

After a brief pause...

Teacher: 'What is it called?"

Students: 50% *b l a n k*, 30% wondered what the question is directed at, roughly 10% think they know the answer but cannot be bothered to put up their hands, 5% simply shout out the answer "GLASS... cher!! GLASS!". The remainder 5% were still busy trying to complete their mathematics homework to be handed the next period.

What can I say for this (again)... Being Persistent is good. But being persistently stubborn in irresponsible behaviour is disastrous.

What can be worst than that??? Lacking self-awareness on everything you do sounds like: "I do not want to or need to know why I do what I do, and I do not care as long as I think I want to do what I do and I just do".

Bird Cartoons - March & April 2008

I got the inspiration in a staff meeting when the principal attempted to quiz her staffs if they knew what the four thrusts of the school was. It was for the purpose of catching those who were not paying attention as well as to ensure that when the external validators come to our school, we can 'show' that we all 'know' the school's truss... I mean thrusts.

The only four thrusts I can remember is recorded in the cartoon. It is hard to convince people to internalize new policies or initiatives if the whole objective of 'doing' things ends up for the purpose of benefiting some individual's performance bonus...

How can you tell if it was done because the person's performance bonus is at stake? EASY. Ask: "If there would be no performace bonus for THAT thing you do, would you still do anyway"?

It is one thing to say 'do it' for the students and nothing else. It is another to say 'do it' when your performance bonus hinges on that thing you do which everyone, including you, knows it is obviously fake. Which category do you belong to?

Bird Cartoons - March 2008: With Pilot G-2 Pen

This are my very first bird cartoons. To be precise they are a bunch of cartoon Mynahs... I know it doesn't look like one. But hey... cartoonized stuff here.

Portraying birds in humanize forms while retaining the nature of a bird's character: somewhat silly and innocent in their approach to doing things. And somehow related to us in a certain sense. =)

Looking at an ostrich egg and didn't figured out it can't be their 'kind'... this is my VERY FIRST bird cartoon. Just loved them in their silly mode... haha...

A bird can't build a house like that. But birds do build nest humans can't build - without nails, glue and standard joints! So who's actually smarter? It is difficult to establish a stable and promising career quickly with little education in today's context especially in Singpore. Here you have a mother bird who appear pretty clueless to the little bird's question. And another scholarly birdy who does things very differently from the norm. Education without a self-motivated thinking mind is useless.

Another one emphasing on the need for education. This time it is Mama bird who sees the importance of studying. Some stress is good for little birdy. But too much to handle may drive him straight into the turbine!!! One more... refrain from comparing a child with another. Understand that they are unique individuals developing their potentials in their own biological pace. Eventually it is the one who always strives for the best effort for anything who will be on par or beyond his peers. The timing to get there is secondary. Attitude is primary.
